The Role
Leading the development of an AI-powered framework for transforming complex analytical software into scalable cloud-native platforms.
Many high-value analytical applications were originally designed for single-node or limited-scale execution and struggle to efficiently process today’s increasingly large and complex datasets. This role focuses on transforming those applications into scalable, distributed solutions running on a Spark-based cloud platform.
As a Lead Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across architecture, design, and engineering execution, AI-assisted development, and distributed computing strategy. You will work closely with bioinformatics domain experts, distributed computing specialists, and platform engineers to analyze existing software systems, redesign computational workflows, and guide the team in applying AI-assisted engineering techniques to accelerate software modernization.
This role is ideal for a senior engineer who can operate independently, lead new, complex technical initiatives, mentor engineers, and make sound architectural decisions in ambiguous, high-impact problem spaces.
Key Responsibilities
Translate business objectives to technical solutions.
Lead R&D to discover novel approaches and propose technical solutions.
Lead the design and development of a next-generation AI-powered software transformation framework capable of accelerating the modernization of complex analytical applications.
Own key architectural decisions for converting legacy computational tools into scalable cloud-native solutions.
Define technical direction, engineering standards, and transformation methodologies for AI-assisted software modernization.
Guide the use of AI agents, LLMs, and emerging AI engineering techniques to automate software analysis, code transformation, validation, and optimization.
Lead technical investigations into how existing software systems can be restructured, decomposed, or re-implemented to operate efficiently in distributed environments.
Collaborate with distributed computing specialists to design target architectures using Spark-based execution models for large-scale data processing.
Build and guide the development of reusable transformation pipelines, automation tooling, and engineering frameworks that enable software modernization at scale.
Establish validation strategies, quality frameworks, and technical review processes to ensure transformed systems maintain functional correctness and reproducibility.
Drive architectural decisions around scalability, maintainability, performance, infrastructure efficiency, and long-term platform evolution.
Mentor senior and mid-level engineers, review technical designs, and raise the engineering quality of the team.
Partner with domain experts to understand application requirements and translate them into scalable, practical technical solutions.
Prototype and evaluate new AI-assisted engineering approaches that improve transformation speed, engineering productivity, and software quality.
Contribute to the organization’s long-term strategy for AI-driven software modernization, distributed computing, and engineering automation.
Must-have Qualifications
8+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership on complex software systems.
Deep expertise in distributed computing using Apache Spark, PySpark, Scala, or equivalent large-scale data processing frameworks.
Strong software architecture and system design skills, with demonstrated experience designing scalable, cloud-native applications.
Proven experience modernizing or re-architecting complex software systems, including decomposing monolithic applications into scalable distributed solutions.
Strong programming skills in Python and/or Scala, with the ability to write clean, maintainable, production-quality code.
Experience designing high-performance data processing pipelines and optimizing applications for scalability, parallelism, and resource efficiency.
Experience building developer platforms, engineering frameworks, automation systems, or reusable software infrastructure.
Hands-on experience applying AI-assisted software engineering techniques, including LLMs, AI coding agents, or automated code generation tools, to improve engineering productivity.
Experience leading technical investigations, evaluating architectural tradeoffs, and making sound engineering decisions in ambiguous problem spaces.
Strong understanding of cloud-native architecture, containerization, CI/CD, infrastructure automation, and modern software development practices.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across software engineering, distributed computing, AI, and scientific domain experts.
Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, conduct architectural reviews, and raise engineering quality across a team.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Experience with scientific computing, computational biology, bioinformatics, or other computationally intensive analytical applications.
Experience with high-performance computing (HPC), GPU computing, or large-scale parallel computing.
Experience building AI agents or autonomous software engineering workflows.
Experience with compiler technologies, static code analysis, program transformation, or source-to-source translation.
Experience with workflow orchestration platforms such as Airflow, Nextflow, or similar technologies.
Experience contributing to open-source frameworks or widely adopted developer tools.
