The Role

We are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join a core engineering team dedicated to accelerating genomics and disease research. The ideal candidate thrives in a challenging environment and is motivated by collaborating with intelligent, driven professionals to deliver impactful platforms such as precisionFDA and the UK Biobank. This position integrates infrastructure engineering, automation, and platform reliability. Responsibilities include assisting in the management and modernization of our current cloud environment while driving the adoption of industry-standard tooling and best practices.

We are looking for candidates who are:

  • Strong software engineers with a demonstrated interest in AWS or other cloud platforms

  • Deeply engaged in DevOps practices and remain up to date with emerging tools and methodologies

  • Proactive in identifying, prioritizing, and reducing  technical debt

  • Passionate about defining and managing infrastructure as code

  • Skilled at transforming complex systems into clear insights through metrics and data visualization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain high availability and scalability of a large-scale cloud platform running thousands of servers, primarily on AWS

  • Design, implement, and evolve infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)

  • Drive automation to minimize manual effort and reduce operational risk

  • Maintain, upgrade, and continuously improve our existing cloud infrastructure

  • Support migrations toward industry-standard tooling and modern DevOps practices

  • Strengthen the platform’s security posture through tooling, configuration, and process improvements

  • Implement and maintain robust monitoring, logging, and alerting to ensure visibility and reliability.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering and data teams to solve complex, real-world problems

  • Provide pragmatic recommendations to improve platform architecture, workflows, and developer experience.

Must-Have Qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with Linux system administration in cloud environments (AWS preferred)

  • Experience with core AWS services and modern cloud infrastructure

  • Strong scripting and automation skills (Bash; Python or similar preferred)

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and containerized environments (Terraform, Docker; Kubernetes a plus)

  • CI/CD experience and working knowledge of monitoring and logging systems

  • Ability to write clear, maintainable code and automation scripts

  • Strong communication and time management skills; professional working proficiency in English

  • Ability to collaborate across US and European time zones as needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience

Nice-to-have Qualifications

  • Experience with additional cloud providers (e.g., Azure)

  • Familiarity with configuration management and image-building tools (Packer, Chef, or similar)

  • Experience supporting data platforms or large-scale data workloads

  • Exposure to databases such as MongoDB
